Host-read podcast pricing

Host-read podcast sponsorship rates: price the media and the work

A public 2026 benchmark can anchor the media portion of a host-read quote. The final fee still needs to cover the creator work, placement, proof, exclusivity, and rights the sponsor is actually buying.

The short answer: start with a $25–$40 CPM comparison, not an automatic quote

Acast’s current 2026 buying guide describes host-read sponsorships on individual shows at roughly $25–$40 CPM as a planning range. Use that range to check the media value of a defined audience unit. Do not treat it as a universal minimum, a guaranteed clearing price, or the full fee for a custom read.

A direct host-read deal can also require talking points, research, scripting, recording, revisions, approval handling, a premium placement, disclosure, campaign proof, reporting, category exclusivity, and licensed reuse. Price those deliverables explicitly instead of hiding them inside an unexplained CPM.

Show the media arithmetic before adding anything else

Media reference = qualified units ÷ 1,000 × comparison CPM.
Qualified unitsAt $25 CPMAt $40 CPMWhat this means
500$12.50$20The media reference alone may not cover the production work.
2,500$62.50$100A scoped flat fee may be clearer than CPM-only pricing.
10,000$250$400The reference is meaningful, but it is still only one line of the quote.

These examples are transparent arithmetic using a public planning range. They are not recommended prices, income claims, or evidence that a buyer will accept the quote.

Define the denominator before you use CPM

IAB Tech Lab’s podcast measurement guidance distinguishes downloads, audience estimates, and ad delivery. A download is not automatically one person, a completed listen, an ad impression, a click, or a purchase.

In the proposal, name the hosting or measurement platform, metric, geography if relevant, episode window, forecast method, reporting date, and whether the buy is based on expected or delivered units. Keep the same definition in the campaign report.

  • Use a recent repeatable episode window, not one unusually strong release.
  • Separate whole-episode delivery from the exact sponsor placement being sold.
  • State whether the number is an average, median, forecast, minimum, or delivered result.
  • Do not promise attention, traffic, sales, or attribution the measurement cannot prove.

Scope the host-read production work

  • Format and duration: live read, host-read insertion, baked-in integration, or another defined format.
  • Creative input: sponsor script, talking points, creator-written copy, research, or product use.
  • Recording and editing: number of versions, revision limit, approval deadline, and late-change handling.
  • Placement: pre-roll, mid-roll, post-roll, dedicated segment, episode, date, and run window.
  • Proof: publication link, timestamp, screenshot, delivery export, and reporting date.

Price rights, exclusivity, and scarcity as separate terms

The purchased placement does not automatically grant the sponsor permission to reuse the creator’s voice, likeness, or recording in paid ads, social clips, landing pages, or another campaign. Define channel, territory, term, edit permission, and paid-media use before adding a rights fee.

Do the same for exclusivity. Name the category, competitors covered, start and end dates, affected inventory, and any exceptions. A vague promise not to work with similar brands can remove more future inventory than the fee justifies.

Assign the sponsorship disclosure before recording

FTC guidance says a material connection that could affect how people evaluate an endorsement should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously. Put the disclosure responsibility, wording approval, placement, and any repeated disclosure requirement in the campaign scope. This checklist is operational guidance, not legal advice; the parties remain responsible for the rules that apply to their campaign and audience.

Turn the benchmark into a defensible quote

Use the free podcast sponsorship rate calculator to separate the media reference from fixed production, proof, scarcity, and exclusivity. Check the assumptions against the 2026 CPM benchmark guide, define the operating terms with the sponsorship contract checklist, and send the buyer a traceable scope with the sponsor proposal template.

Know what a host-read rate cannot promise

No CPM, flat fee, format, placement, or host relationship guarantees sponsor demand, listener action, attribution, sales, renewal, or creator income. Cite the source date, show the calculation, define the deliverables, and keep every outcome claim no stronger than the evidence.
